John J. Choi is currently the Southern CA Policy Manager at Airbnb where he leads efforts in Southern California to ensure middle class families can share their homes while allowing visitors from across the globe to live like locals. He also focuses on strengthening the Airbnb community’s relationship with small business owners, civic leaders and community organizations. Prior to this, he served as President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, to which he was appointed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and unanimously confirmed by Los Angeles City Council in July 2011. The five-member Board of Public Works is the City’s only full-time, non-elected policy-making body and collectively functions as the General Manager of the Department of Public Works. With more than 5,800 personnel, the Department of Public Works is the City’s third largest municipal agency and is responsible for the delivery of basic city services while managing the construction, renovation, and operation of public facilities and infrastructure including bridges, roadways and sidewalks, sewers and streetlights, and wastewater treatment plants.
Currently, Choi serves as the Liaison Commissioner for the Bureau of Street Services which manages over 7,000 miles of streets, 11,000 mile sidewalk network, and the City’s urban forest of 700,000 trees. As the Street Services Liaison, he plays a critical role in maintaining a high quality of life for the residents of the City of Los Angeles by ensuring responsiveness and superior provision of services including pothole repair, emergency tree failure response, street resurfacing, graffiti removal, street sweeping, and general municipal code enforcement for illegal dumping, sign postings, vending and other encroachments into the public right of way.Choi previously served as Economic Development Director for the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, a chartered Central Labor Council of the National AFL-CIO that represents over 800,000 workers and over 350 affiliated unions. He also served as Special Assistant to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and as Senior Area Coordinator for Los Angeles City Councilmember Martin Ludlow. He was appointed to the 2011 Los Angeles County Boundary Review Committee by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, is a former member of the Los Angeles City Workforce Investment Board, and serves on the boards of multiple community based organizations in the Los Angeles area.
Choi received his B.A. in History from UCLA, and his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law. Go Bruins. In his spare time, Choi enjoys playing basketball, rooting for the Lakers, and surfing.
